a documentary film
by Kristian St. Clair
Combining vintage footage with
revealing interviews, director Kristian St. Clair reflects on
the once potent importance of composer, arranger and
polymorphous musician Gary McFarland (1933-1971). This
documentary film, the first-ever full-scale examination of
McFarland's life and music, features a galaxy of jazz's biggest stars
- including Clark Terry, Bob Brookmeyer and Steve Kuhn - recalling Gary McFarland's vital contribution to the
1960's music scene. Friends and family also reminisce over
McFarland's life in candid, thoughtful moments. First-time
director Kristian St.
Clair weaves together a touching tapestry here of a very musical life and
parts many of the clouds that shroud McFarland's strange and
mysterious death.
