The rise in popularity of disco in the mid 1970s brought about the 12-inch record. This new LP-sized medium allowed for songs otherwise available on seven-inch 45-RPM records to become extended or remixed for maximum dancing enjoyment. Initially, the 12-inch record was developed for disc jockeys to play in clubs. But as disco's popularity expanded outside of clubs in urban American, many of these 12-inch records became available to consumers. Indeed many record stores began to specialize in 12-inch record sales. In an attempt to infiltrate itself in this highly profitable dance market, CTI issued several 12-inch records. Despite the predominance of CD technology, 12-inch records still prevail and thrive today. But not at CTI.
