The 5000 series was introduced in 1975 as a "pop series" of recordings (connoted by the inclusion of "PS" within the CTI logo appearing on sleeves CTI 5000 through CTI 7-5004). Initially, the recordings in this series carried a retail price tag $5.98, one dollar under the industry standard of the time and lower than the selling price of other CTI titles during this period. Records preceded by a "7" in this series indicate a shift toward a $7.98 list price. This series yielded only eight recordings, including both of composer Lalo Shifrin's two superb CTI records, Patti Austin's first two CTI efforts and both of Seawind's CTI albums. Curiously, Creed Taylor only produced five of the sessions himself. But it was Taylor who produced the series' most ambitious recording: Dave Matthew's excellent song cycle, Dune. This one record deserves much greater recognition and remains the pinnacle of all the fine work Matthews did for CTI during its later years. Only Lalo Schifrin's Black Widow and Patti Austin's Havana Candy from this series have been made readily available on CD. The two Seawind albums were chronicled on a (now out-of-print) compilation and briefly issued by the Japanese label, Vivid (licensed by King Records), until members of the group - who successfully sued Creed Taylor for the rights to their CTI music - prevented further issues. Seawind has issued its two CTI titles independently and, at one time, sold them exclusively through their own web site. |
